Battery Health: The Oven Effect

Your phone battery doesn't fail overnight, it degrades a little every time it gets too hot.

One of the biggest culprits isn't a bad charging habit, it's leaving your phone somewhere the sun can reach it.

What the Oven Effect Actually Does

Lithium-ion batteries, the kind in every iPhone and Android device, are chemically sensitive to heat.

Apple and most Android manufacturers recommend keeping your device between 0°C and 35°C.

Leave a phone on a car dashboard or windowsill in direct sunlight, and the internal temperature can climb well past 45°C within minutes, sometimes hot enough to trigger an automatic shutdown.

Each time this happens, the battery's chemistry breaks down a little further. It's not one dramatic event that kills your battery, it's the accumulation of small heat spikes over months and years that quietly shrinks how much charge it can hold.

Where This Happens Without You Realising

  • Car dashboards and windowsills, glass magnifies heat fast.
  • Hot cars, even when off, heat damages a battery whether it's in use or not.
  • Poolside or beach days, hours face-up in direct sun adds up.
  • Charging in direct sunlight, doubles the heat stress in one sitting.

How to Prevent It

1. Keep it in shade or a bag when outdoors for long periods.

2. Never leave it on a car dashboard, use the glovebox or door pocket instead.

3. Remove the case if it's overheating, some trap heat rather than release it.

4. Charge indoors, out of direct sun.

5. Let it cool naturally if it overheats, never in a fridge or freezer.

One Tip Down, Four to Go

The Oven Effect is just the first of five ways your battery health is quietly being worn down.

If you haven't seen the full breakdown yet, the video covers all five, this is simply tip one, expanded.
